What is International Development

International development has been an area of interest for me for a while, in my research I tried to find answers to the following questions; what is international development, what is the history and how is it made possible.

What is international development?

According to Interaction.org, International development has the goal of improving the well-being of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

An article on Devex.com links international/ global development with human development in international efforts to reduce poverty and inequality and improve health, education and job opportunities around the world.

International development is concerned with improving the lives of people around the world in areas such as health, education, equality and poverty reduction.

History of international development

The history of International Development can be traced back to post world war two, there was a need for countries to build themselves up following the damage done by the war. The construction begun in European countries with the aid of some international organizations that extended their efforts to other parts of the world such as Asia and Africa.
Most African countries at the time were beginning to get their independence from colonial powers and as a result, needed help rebuilding their nations and improving the living standards.
A YouTube video by Kern Beare linked the history to the industrial revolution and how it depended on colonialism which created serious consequences for the developing countries. He stated that the industrial revolution was a catalyst for global economic growth, only that it wasn’t global. As a result, the developed world realized that something had to be done to balance their economic growth with that of the developing world.

There were a number of initiatives put in place to assist in the development plans such as the International Bank for reconstruction and development (IBRD – The World’s largest Development Bank) which was created in 1944 to help Europe rebuild after World War II. IBRD joins with International development association (IDA – part of World Bank that helps the poorest countries) to form the World Bank.

How International Development is made possible
In addition to financial assistance, developed countries and various other bodies also supply equipment, food, knowledge and experts and, are very involved in strengthening the organizational and institutional systems of local workers in the field of development, out of a desire to increase the independence of the local population and decrease its dependence on international aid.
